Clear steering and tongue relief in one training bit. This full cheek snaffle has a blue sweet iron ported mouthpiece. The cheeks help with steering, the port gives the tongue room, and sweet iron encourages a soft, wet mouth. A great training bit for English and Western riders.

Specifications

  • Sizes: 5", 5.5", 6" (other sizes made to order)
  • Mouthpiece: blue sweet iron, ported, unjointed
  • Mouthpiece thickness: 14 mm
  • Cheeks: stainless steel

Key features

  • Full cheek design: the cheeks gently guide the side of the face to help with steering.
  • Stays in place: the bit can't slide through the mouth, making it secure for young or green horses.
  • Wide port: takes pressure off the center of the tongue.
  • Unjointed mouthpiece: steady in the mouth, with no nutcracker action.
  • Blue sweet iron: develops a sweet taste that encourages salivation and bit acceptance.
  • 14 mm mouthpiece: a comfortable medium thickness for most horses.

Often chosen for

  • Young and green horses learning to steer
  • Horses that put their tongue over the bit or stick it out
  • Horses with a thick or fleshy tongue
  • Horses that toss their head because of tongue pressure
  • Horses with a dry mouth
  • Hunters, jumpers, flatwork, trail riding and starting young horses

About sweet iron

Sweet iron is designed to oxidize. With use, the blue color slowly changes to a brownish-grey. This is normal, and it's what gives the sweet taste horses like. If the bit isn't used for a while, a light surface rust may form; simply wipe it off with a damp cloth.

Safety tip

Use with bit keepers (fulmer loops) on your bridle. They hold the cheeks upright so they can't catch on anything.

How to measure

  1. Place a piece of string in your horse's mouth where the bit sits.
  2. Mark both sides at the corners of the lips.
  3. Measure between the marks. That's your bit size.

The bit should sit snug against the cheeks without pinching. Need another size? We make bits in any size.

Also available

  • The same full cheek with copper rollers, for horses that like something to play with.
  • The same sweet iron ported mouthpiece as a 3 Ring Dutch Gag, for more control.

Please note: every horse is different. This bit helps many horses relax and accept the contact, but it isn't a fix for every problem. Check your show rules before competing.

Care

Rinse with clean water after every ride and dry well. Don't polish the mouthpiece; the natural patina is good for your horse.
