Two levels of control in one bit. This 3-ring Dutch gag (also known as a continental, universal or Pessoa bit) pairs a blue sweet iron ported mouthpiece with stainless steel rings. Ride off the main ring for a soft, snaffle-like feel, or use the lower ring when you need extra brakes in jumping or fast work.
Specifications
- Mouthpiece: blue sweet iron, ported, unjointed
- Mouthpiece thickness: 14 mm
- Rings: stainless steel
- Sizes: 5", 5.5", 6" (other sizes made to order)
Key features
- 2 rein positions: the main ring gives a snaffle feel with no leverage; the lower ring adds leverage and poll pressure.
- Ported mouthpiece: the arch gives the tongue room and relieves pressure on its centre.
- Unjointed design: stays steady in the mouth with no nutcracker action.
- Blue sweet iron: oxidizes to a sweet taste that encourages salivation and acceptance of the bit.
- 14 mm thickness: a comfortable medium thickness for most horses.
Often chosen for
- Horses that put their tongue over the bit or stick it out
- Horses with a sensitive tongue
- Horses that get strong or heavy in front when jumping or in fast work
- Horses that dislike a curb but respond well to poll pressure
- Show jumping, eventing, cross country and hacking
How to use
- Top ring: attach to your bridle cheekpieces.
- Main ring: snaffle rein, no leverage.
- Lower ring: adds leverage and poll pressure.
- Best used with two reins (main and lower ring), or with roundings for one rein, so you use the lower ring only when needed.
Please note: the lower ring applies strong poll pressure, so this bit is best for experienced riders with soft, steady hands. Every horse is different, and no bit fixes every problem. Check your competition rules before showing. Looking for something milder? See our snaffle bits.
About sweet iron
Sweet iron is designed to oxidize. With use, the blue color gradually turns brownish-grey. This is normal and is what creates the sweet taste horses like. If the bit is stored unused, a light surface rust may form; simply wipe it off with a damp cloth.
Compare our Dutch gags
- German Silver Dutch Gag: double jointed with lozenge, 16 mm. Gentle on the tongue.
- This bit: ported, unjointed, 14 mm. For tongue relief.
- Hollow Mouth Dutch Gag: single jointed stainless steel, 18 mm. For sensitive bars.

How to measure
- Place a piece of string in your horse's mouth where the bit sits.
- Mark both sides at the corners of the lips.
- Measure between the marks. That's your bit size.
Between sizes? Choose the larger one so the lips aren't pinched. Need a different size? We make our own bits, so custom sizes are available.
Care
Rinse with clean water after every ride and dry well. Do not polish the mouthpiece; the natural patina is good for your horse.
