A step-up bit for the middle stage of training. This correction port D ring bit has a stainless steel mouthpiece with copper inlay lines, plus curb hooks on the D rings. The port gives the tongue room and works on the palate and bars, while the hooks let you add mild leverage with a curb strap when your horse is ready.
Specifications
- Sizes: 5", 5.5", 6" (other sizes made to order)
- Mouthpiece: correction port, stainless steel with copper inlay lines
- Mouthpiece thickness: 10 mm (slim)
- Rings: stainless steel D rings with curb hooks
Key features
- Correction port: takes pressure off the tongue and works on the palate and bars.
- Curb hooks on the D rings: add a curb strap for mild leverage, or ride without one for direct contact.
- D ring cheeks: keep the bit steady, help with steering and don't pinch the lips.
- Copper inlay lines: encourage salivation and a soft, responsive mouth.
- Slim 10 mm mouthpiece: clear, precise signals.
- Strong, rust-resistant and easy to clean.
Often chosen for
- Horses moving up from a plain snaffle to the next stage of training
- Horses that need a little more control without a harsh mouthpiece
- Horses that put their tongue over the bit, or have a dry mouth
- Western training, ranch riding, trail and hunter pleasure
How to use
- Without a curb strap: works like a D ring snaffle with direct rein contact.
- With a curb strap on the hooks: adds mild leverage for extra control. Adjust so two fingers fit between the strap and the chin.
Please note: this port works on the palate, so it's best for horses at an intermediate level of training and riders with soft, steady hands. It's not recommended for beginner riders or horses with a very low palate. Every horse is different, so check your show rules before competing. Starting a young horse? See our Full Cheek Snaffle.
How to measure
- Place a piece of string in your horse's mouth where the bit sits.
- Mark both sides at the corners of the lips.
- Measure between the marks. That's your bit size.
The bit should sit snug against the cheeks without pinching. Need a different size? We make bits in any size.
Care
Rinse with clean water after every ride and dry well. The copper may darken over time; this is natural and normal.
